THE ARTIST

RAPHAEL

Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, known simply as Raphael, was born in 1483 and became one of the defining artists of the Italian High Renaissance.

Alongside Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, Raphael helped shape an era in which painting, architecture and classical ideas were being reconsidered with extraordinary ambition.

His work became known for balance, clarity and idealised beauty. Even when his compositions were crowded with figures and movement, they retained an underlying sense of order.

The Triumph of Galatea is a perfect example. Bodies turn in different directions, creatures surge through the water and arrows cross the sky, yet the composition never loses its centre.

Raphael turns complexity into harmony.

Five centuries later, the movement still feels immediate.

THREE DECKS

DROMEDA takes the original composition beyond the conventional frame.

Rather than reproducing Raphael's fresco as a single rectangle, the image has been carefully positioned across three individual skateboard decks. The spaces between the boards become part of the work.

Galatea remains at the centre while the surrounding figures, water and movement travel across separate physical surfaces.

Viewed directly from the front, the three decks reconnect into Raphael's composition. Move around the piece and the maple edges, concave forms and separation between each board begin to take over.

THE CONSTRUCTION

SEVEN LAYERS
OF MAPLE

A genuine skateboard deck — not simply the shape of one.

Each DROMEDA deck is constructed from seven laminated layers of maple, pressed together to create the strength, curvature and profile of a genuine skateboard deck.

Look closely at the edge and those individual layers remain visible.

This is important to us. The skateboard isn't simply a shape onto which an artwork has been printed. Its construction is part of the piece.

Each deck retains the defining characteristics of a skateboard: its laminated maple construction, concave profile, raised nose and tail, rounded edge and truck mounting holes.

The artwork is applied across the face of each deck and finished with a satin surface that allows the image to retain its depth without the high-gloss appearance of a conventional reproduction.

Seven laminated layers remain visible along the edge of the deck.

THE OBJECT

Three individual 31 × 8 inch decks form the complete triptych.

The result sits somewhere between painting, sculpture and an object from skate culture.

From directly in front, the three images resolve into Raphael's composition.

Move around the piece and the experience changes. The curvature of the decks becomes visible. The maple edges appear. Shadows form behind each board.

What initially reads as an image begins to reveal itself as a three-dimensional object.
