GÉRÔME

Jean-Léon Gérôme was born in France in 1824 and became one of the most prominent academic painters of the nineteenth century.

His work reconstructed worlds far removed from contemporary Paris — ancient Rome, classical Greece, North Africa and the Middle East — with extraordinary technical precision.

Architecture, costume, anatomy and small historical details were rendered with such clarity that his imagined scenes could feel almost documentary.

Gérôme also understood spectacle. His paintings frequently place the viewer uncomfortably close to scenes of power, violence and human vulnerability rather than allowing them to remain distant historical events.

In A Roman Slave Market, there is no heroic vision of antiquity. Instead, the viewer is brought directly into the transaction.

The familiar rectangle disappears. What remains is the image, the maple and the space between them.

DROMEDA rebuilds Gérôme's composition across three individual skateboard decks rather than reproducing it inside another conventional frame.

That changes the way the work occupies a room. The breaks between each board become part of the composition, while the curved deck profiles create depth and shadow that a flat print cannot reproduce.

From directly in front, the three boards reconnect into a single image. Move to either side and the piece begins to reveal its physical construction.

It feels less like hanging a picture and more like installing an object.

THE CONSTRUCTION

SEVEN LAYERS
OF MAPLE

It looks different because it is built differently.

Each DROMEDA deck is constructed from seven laminated layers of maple, pressed together to create the strength, curvature and profile of a genuine skateboard deck.

Look closely at the edge and those individual layers remain visible.

This matters because the skateboard isn't simply a decorative shape onto which an artwork has been printed. Its physical construction becomes part of the piece.

Each board retains the defining characteristics of a skateboard: its laminated maple construction, concave profile, raised nose and tail, rounded edge and truck mounting holes.

The artwork is transferred across the face of each deck and finished with a satin surface designed to retain the richness of the image without the reflective appearance of a glossy poster.

Seven laminated layers remain visible along the edge of the deck.

THE OBJECT
